I am skipping church to watch “Sinners”. This movie is the sh**. This bloodbath of a movie shows the world that true freedom comes from our connections and relationships–not money-driven power. If you aren’t slaughtering Irish vampires with your closest friends, what are you really doing with your life?
Set in Jim Crow-era Clarsksdale, Mississippi in 1937, our story follows two twins and their cousin as they establish their very own Juke joint. The twins, Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) are soldiers and ex-gang members who stole money from mob boss, Al Capone in Chicago. They return to Mississippi with a frightening reputation in order to establish a place for themselves. They enlist their young cousin, Preacher Boy and blues musician Sammie (Miles Canton) to help them. Unfortunately, that’s where the happiness ends and some weird sh** goes down. The movie establishes that musicians–in this case, Sammie–who produced music with a certain kind of power can breach the division between the past and the future. Sadly for our cast, that also draws in evil. Turns out, the wickedness is an Irish vampire who–alongside two Ku Klux Klan members he turned–attacks our cast.
yMichael B. Jordan does an outstanding job. He accurately distinguishes Smoke and Stack, giving them their own personalities, mannerisms and style. Furthermore, Miles Canton is an incredible singer who blow Sammie’s character out of the water. Unsurprisingly , this movie gives the audience a scare–and a good one at that. “Sinners” is incredible at building tension. The plethora of jumpscares will startle you, and your probably won’t see them coming. The greatest part of this movie is the soundtrack. It mixes dark Cathedral organs with blues and old-timey Southern sounds. The songs in “Sinners” are beyond amazing and immerse you in its world. Finally, the cinematography is stunning. The scenes place you into a cramped and often dark, atmosphere. The scenes, both grand and small, are works of art that build incredible tension-and with style. And that’s mostly because you (quite literally) can’t see what’s coming.
This movie struggled to give me a reason to dislike it. However, I do think this movies moves a bit too fast. The buildup to the eventual vampire slaughter feels too quick, without giving us much of an introduction to the vampire himself, Remmick (Jack O’Connell). I would have liked to get his backstory/
“Sonners articulates several notable themes. The vampire thereat definitely emphasizes that your should not–and I repeat, should not trust everyone. Even someone you “know” could be, in this case, a vampire that wants to eat you. The movie also highlights that true freedom comes from the connections we have with others and the relationships we build with them.
The intended audience for “Sinners” is definitely not for children. There’s a lot of blood and gore. However anyone who’s a good fan of music, suspense and culture will enjoy “Sinners”.
Overall, I’ll give this movie a sold rating. 10/10
