Mariah the Scientists’ “Hearts Sold Separately” album has a unique sound, different from all of her previous albums. Released in 2025, the album’s soundtrack has a slight hint of 1980’s rock with her R & B signature. Produced alongside nineteen85, they purposely wanted a sound with the flair of 1980’s stadium rock with a mix of modern hip hop. Overall, it has a reminiscing, calming sound while she plays with her vocal ability
Although we know that Mariah the Scientist dropped out of St. John’s University her junior year studying biology, she is now a successful R& B singer. Mariah the Scientist is only 28 years old, originating out of Atlanta, Georgia. Known for her relationship with Young Thug her debut album “Master” released in 2019 gained her quick popularity and a fan base.
Throughout the album, there is a constant use of the keyboards which set the tone for the album. In the track, “Rainy Days”, Mariah says, “I was naive, not ignorant, so much for my innocence.” This tells us that because she lacked experience and knowledge she didn’t know better. Specifically in her relationship, she wasn’t hard headed to the signs, she just didn’t have wisdom.
The opening song of the album is “Sacrifice”. The memorable part of this song is the softness of the background vocals and the keyboards. Another song down the line is “Is it a Crime?” the harmony in the vocals really grab your attention. In this song, Mariah really emphasizes asking if it is a crime to be in love? My favorite song of the album is “Rainy Days”. This track adds violins into it which makes it different than the other songs. Although there are violins, it doesn’t change the full sound; there is still a calming, rock sound to it. In this soung, she is taking accountability for her mistakes. She labels the hard times he caused as “Rainy Days”
The weakest song in the album is “More”. The sound of this track doesn’t fit the rest of the album. Every song in the album opens up with keyboards or violin, this sound sounds like pop music. It relates to a song in the Lion King rather than the other songs in the album.
Overall, Mariah the Scientist’s “Hearts Sold Separately” made a successful album that focuses on being in love young. Fans who are young and like R&B or complicated love stories would love this album
I would give this album a 9/10 for its strong vocab, choice of instruments and the calming nature it brings.
