“I am your way out. This world already left you for dead. Won’t let you build, won’t let you fellowship. We will do just that. Together. Forever.” Remmick the vampire said this in the movie Sinners as he was trying to lure the main characters to join his side. What would you do if you had the opportunity to become a vampire in the South during the repressed 1930’s?
Taking place in Mississippi circa 1932, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan as the Smoke and Stack twins. The brothers return to Mississippi after being gone for seven years in Chicago. They buy an old mill and turn it into a Juke joint. The first part of the movie finds the twins gathering people to help start up their club. Sammie Moore, played by Miles Canton went with Stack to find Delta Slim (Delroy Linda) to get his to play music at their club. At the train station where they found him, we also meet Mary (Hailee Steinfield) who becomes a central character to all the lives. Smoke visits Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) to ask her if she can cook food for the club. Remmick (Jack O’Connell) is he main villain in the movie. He hears the Juke Joint’s music and wants to be a part of it but gets denied. Smoke and Stack are in debt because their customers don’t make a lot of money. Mary is tuned into a vampire and then turns Stack into one. Stack tries to convince his brother to join the vampires. It is hard for anyone to see their loved ones as vampires.
Michael B. Jordan take the movie to another level with his acting. There was a scene where Stack is trying to convince his brother and says, “We was never going to be free”. The delivery of ghat line was perfect and it made me think of the struggles Black Americans still go through. A big strength of the movie is they music. In a scene where Stack and Mary are talking and he tells her that he loves her, the beginning of Dangerous by Hailee Steinfled was playing and it made the scene standout even more.
Smoke is dressed as an Irish gangster and Stack is dressed as an Italian one. Their outfits represent the gang that they were a part of and robbed. This movie does things differently with its storytelling and choices made about the scenes shot. In the beginning of the movie, they follow Grace’s daughter across the street instead staying with Smoke and Bo.
A weakness this movie has is that it is too dark to see. When Remmick was outside chasing Sammie it was had to see the actual fight go down.
This movie shows what it is like to have a community. They stuck together when they were being attacked. Sinners has themes of religion and spirituality. There is a popular saying that the devil knows his scripture too and in the movie Remmick who is often referred to as the devil says scripture with Sammie. Annie is called a witch and creates Mojo bags representing the spiritual spect in the movie.
Sinners is a movie made for people who like fiction and non-fiction mixed together. I also think this movie was made for Black people who like seeing black people in fantasy tropes. I give this movie a 10/10
