On September 3rd, the boys varsity soccer team took on Jewish Community High School, seeking redemption after last year’s playoff loss. The first half was evenly matched, with solid defense from Junior Jamie Parham and Senior William Richie, whose speed and tenacity disrupted Jewish Community’s offense. Sophomore Zaid Dobashi was a pillar on Emery’s defense as he made key defensive stops that prevented many goals. Despite their efforts, the absence of key starter players and bench players led to a late defensive breakdown, and Jewish Community swiftly secured a 3-0 win in the final 20 minutes.
Using the loss as motivation, the team quickly regrouped for their next match against Averroes on September 6th. The game began with a setback when Averroes scored within the first 20 minutes. However, a quick equalizer by Junior Kevin Herrera shifted the momentum in Emery’s favor. This goal led to Emery regaining their confidence and it showed during the second half.
Freshman William Hernandez showcased impressive skill on offense. William dribbled easily around defenders, made key passes, and drew fouls. Junior Haitham Omar created key shot opportunities from the left wing. Haitham used his swift dribbling to get by defenders and then use his calculated passes to set up teammates. Senior Cameron Kane-Ross sealed the victory with a penalty, earning Emery a hard-fought 2-1 win. Despite the win, Coach and Alumni Todd Kane-Ross emphasized the need for improvement, noting missed opportunities that could have increased the score of their win easily.
Congratulations to the Emery Boys Soccer team on their victory against Averroes! Next up, the Spartans face Quarry Lane on Wednesday, September 11th.
